What is a CASA??

A court appointed special advocate is a specially trained volunteer who has been appointed by the judge to gather information on cases in Circuit Court that involve the possible abuse or neglect of children. In order to collect this information, the CASA volunteer is given a court order from the judge which allows him/her to interview anyone who has been involved with the family-parents, children, social workers, foster parents, teachers, day care workers, doctors, counselors, neighbors, etc. After conducting these interviews, the CASA volunteer prepares written reports for the court, attends hearings, advocates for the best interest of the child.

Step 1: CASA is appointed to the casa by the judge: The volunteer starts meeting with the child(ren) at least monthly.

Step 2: The volunteer will gather information for the court and advocate for the best interest of the child. Information will come from different sources such as teachers, medical providers, foster families.

Step 3: The volunteer will provide their recommendations to the court and will make sure the child’s wishes are taken into consideration and known to the judge. The volunteer will be their voice in court.

Step 4: CASA is involved in the case from the time of removal until permanency is achieved. So, they will continue to advocate for the child until the end.
